All I used was some Duplicolor 500 degree "aluminum"-colored ceramic paint. A lot of people have their plastic painted with automotive paint, but I'm not sure how that holds up. I just cleaned the pieces real good, sanded them with a very fine 400-ish grit, and sprayed them with non-residue brake cleaner to get any grease off.
As for the engine bay, yup... 90% of the work was accomplished with Goo-gone and a small nylon detail brush. I used a stainless detail brush on all of the metal parts. Took a LOT of scrubbing.. but it did come off.
